“Fell From Grace” was inspired by my upbringing in the Baptist church. We had a preacher who was kind of terrifying to me as a kid. He would say, “you don’t know who the devil is. He’s a GOOD looking man. He’s a smooth talker,” and so on. It was an ongoing theme. He would really get into talking about the devil and hell, so of course we all thought about it. I was fascinated with this and wondered who the devil might be and if he would come to get me. As an adult, the metaphor is clear. The devil is that thing you just can’t resist even though you know it’s really bad for you and brings you down. We all know that devil, and this song is about the devil as the lover who’s just too good to leave even though you know you should.
Working with David Snider and Geoff Gray at Far & Away Studios in Boulder, CO was the absolute best recording experience I can imagine. It was astounding to watch both of them in action, pretty much reading each other’s minds. David’s musical vocabulary is so broad, and he has worked and/or toured with Pat Benetar, Sonny Sharrock, Bruce Springsteen and Kid Rock to drop a few names on his behalf. While I wrote the lyrics and sang the melody, David composed every aspect of the song and all of the instrumentation. He also played multiple instruments for the track to perfection (except slide guitar – that’s me!). He and Geoff fit all the pieces together until it felt right for all of us. Geoff Gray is the Owner and Head Engineer at Far & Away Studios and is such a pro. He hears every detail of a song and is a perfectionist. He has a way of making everyone feel like they’re in his living room in a pressure-free, creative environment. Geoff was a student of Les Paul and has recorded hundreds of albums in every genre over the years, working with artists such as Led Zeppelin and Sonny Sharrock, as well as local artists. I am very grateful to Geoff and David for who they are as human beings and for their musical brilliance. I’m excited to see what the future brings as we make more music!
